Chapter 10: Inequalities

Futures Channel Movie

#3003 Undersea Treasure - A probability map, constructed by a mathematician, locates a sunken U.S. ship with the largest sunken gold treasure in U.S. history, and reveals even greater wonders.

Chapter Engagement

Tell students that sometimes in mathematics we do not know an exact answer, but we do know something about the right answer.  Ask them to think about this as the watch Futures Channel Movie #3003 Undersea Treasure.  When the movie is over, ask students individually to write down another example where they know something about the value of a variable and were able to use what they knew (for example, someone might know that a CD costs less than $15.00 even if they don’t know they exact price, so they know they can afford to buy it).  Discuss some answers, and tell students that in this chapter they are going to learn more about statements that one amount is more than or less than another amount, which are called inequalities.
