California Middle School Mathematics Concepts and Skills: Course 2

Explain to students that they are going to see a video about someone who designs a certain form of transportation, and you want them to watch closely and see how many different shapes they can identify as they watch. Show Futures Channel Movie #1012, Bicycle Design.

When the movie is over, uncover a bicycle at the front of the room and ask students to look at it closely and write down everything they can about the shapes they see, and what they know about those shapes.

Discuss answers, and list the geometry vocabulary words that students use. Explain that these are all parts of the subject of geometry, and that they are going to be learning more about those shapes in this chapter.
