Digital Video Resource Library (DVRL)

Orientation

Part 2: Lesson Planning CD-ROM

Step 1: Load The Futures Channel Digital Video Resource Library CD-ROM "Movie Guides" into your computer (not the DVD).

If you have a Windows system, the opening screen should come up automatically. If you have a Mac, you will need to open the CD in "Finder" and click on the "PlayMac" icon to open the program. (Note the Mac version of the program uses Flash; if this is not already installed on your computer you can get it at www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer.)

Step 2: Click on the opening screen to launch the program. This program gives you access to all of the Movie Guides in the DVRL, according to their curriculum content.

Step 3: Click on "Mathematics," at left, and a box appears with major mathematics topics. Move your mouse down this list until the "Geometry" topic is highlighted, and another box appears listing major geometry subtopics. Move your mouse down this list and click on "Circles."

What appears is a list of the Movie Guides which present mathematics problems that are related to circles. For each movie guide listed, the small numbers at the bottom of the listing indicate exactly which problems in the Guide relate to the selected mathematics topic (in this case, circles).

Look at the listing for Movie Guide 1012, Bicycle Design. At the bottom of the listing are the numbers "4" and "5," indicating that Movie Guide problems #4 and #5 relate to circles.

If you now click on the "Bicycle Design" listing, the Movie Guide itself appears (the Guide is an Adobe Acrobat PDF document and you must have that program to view it; you can download it free at http://www.adobe.com).

Look at problems 4 and 5 in the Movie Guide and notice the connection to the subtopic of circles.

Step 4: Go back to the CD window, and click on "Mathematics", then "Fractions, Decimals, Percents, Ratios," then "Operations," then "Standards". The list you see now consists of more specific understandings and skills. Click on the item "Can solve problems of the form x% of a = b when any two of the factors are known," and now you will see a listing of Movie Guide problems which relate to that specific skill. Select one of those, note the number(s) of the problem(s) given for that Movie Guide, and click on it to open it in Adobe Acrobat and review those problems.

Step 5: Spend a few minutes exploring the CD, selecting other mathematics or science topics, subtopics or standards and looking at the Movie Guide problems which illustrate the real-world applications of those curriculum elements. Then answer the questions below:
