Orientation

Part 3: IMaST Utilization Guide

Step 1: This final part of the orientation will familiarize you with the tools that have been specially created to facilitate use of The Futures Channel DVRL with LAUSD IMaST teachers. To begin with, click here to open a second browser window showing the table of contents for the IMaST Utilization Guide. Look over the Table of Contents for your subject area (math or science), then return to this browser window.

If you are a math teacher, continue just below for your orientation. If you are a science teacher, click here.

Mathematics Orientation

Step 2: Read through this step, then switch to the other browser window to explore the California Mathematics Framework correlations, looking for these features:

  • Breakdown by grade level.
  • Breakdown according to Framework element within each grade level.
  • Listing of Movies and Movie Guide Problems related to each element of the Framework. Note that the Movie Numbers are hyperlinked to the corresponding Movie Guides.
  • Navigation menu at left links to Framework elements.

Step 3: Read through this step, then switch to the other browser window and click on "Table of Contents" at left to return to the Guide Table of Contents Page. Click on "LAUSD Mathematics Instructional Guide Correlation" and explore those documents, looking for these features:

  • Breakdown by grade level.
  • Breakdown according to Mathematics Instructional Guide section within each grade level, by Quarter.
  • Listing of Movies and Movie Guide Problems related to each section of the Mathematics Instructional Guide. Note that the Movie Numbers are hyperlinked to the corresponding Movie Guides.
  • Navigation menu at left links to Mathematics Instructional Guide elements.

Step Four: Read through this step, then switch to the other browser window and click on "Table of Contents" at top left to return to the Guide Table of Contents Page. Choose a mathematics text and click on it to explore the suggestions for use of the DVRL with that text. Note these features

  • Breakdown by chapter (not every chapter is included)
  • Suggestion for a specific Futures Channel Movie for use with included chapters
  • Detailed description of an activity to do with students in conjunction with the Movie, either at the beginning of the Chapter for the purpose of engagement or at the end of the Chapter for the purpose of assessment.

Science Orientation

Step 2: Read through this step, then switch to the other browser window to return to the Guide Table of Contents Page. Click on "LAUSD Science Instructional Guide Correlation" and explore those documents, looking for these features:

  • Breakdown by grade level.
  • Breakdown according to Science Instructional Guide "Content Standard Group."
  • Listing of Movies related to each Content Standard Group. Note that the Movie Numbers are hyperlinked to the corresponding Movie Guides.
  • A recommended "Prompt" (question) to use with the Movies listed to help students make connections between the Movie and the science topic.
  • Navigation menu at left links to Science Instructional Guide Content Standard Groups.

Step 3: Read through this step, then switch to the other browser window and click on "Table of Contents" at top left to return to the Guide Table of Contents Page. Choose a science text and click on it to explore the suggestions for use of the DVRL with that text. Note these features:

  • Breakdown by chapter (not every chapter is included).
  • Suggestions for one or more Futures Channel Movies for use with included chapters.
  • Navigation menu at left links to all chapters of the selected text.
